Last week at work we were given a frame and asked to do a self portrait which would then be hung in the office. We had two requirements as well ~ the portrait had to have a recognizable image and your name. As usual, I was short on time, so I had to come up with something I could get done quickly. I started out working digitally, but soon gave that up as it was taking too long. Instead, I gathered up some of my favorite things and arranged them on a piece of felt ~ I had to add the photo in via photoshop, along with some additional felt background.
I tried to use items that either had some sort of meaning to me or what I like to do, so I chose some various tools I use like knitting needles, crochet hooks, scissors and tape measure. I also included a few items I made ~ a crocheted & felted brooch, a folded paper ornament. The buttons and other bits and pieces are objects that I am drawn to for one reason or another. The biggest challenge was finding things that looked well together and fit in the space.
Overall, I was happy with the results ~ especially as I ended up photographing it on my kitchen table without decent lighting. I'm hoping to do some more of these ~ it'll be a great excuse to buy more bits and pieces!

That is really a cool idea-and for sure, I would know it was you even without your picture or name- and its got me looking around at my "stuff" wondering what I would use to make my own portrait.
Really beautiful piece Julie! There is enough for my eye to explore and it all works together in such perfect harmony.
Love it! Would also make a great 500 piece puzzle! :)
Julie, this turned out great! See you Thursday!
Lovely and so well balanced. I would love to see what your co-workers did. How many people participated?
Really gorgeous, true creativity
Wow. I love everything about it! Very inspiring.
This is so lovely Julie - great job!
Thanks for all of your positive comments - they made my day! We have about 30 people at my company ~ everyone was to participate - business and creative people ~ so we had a variety of work. As we are a scrapbook company, the majority of the pieces looked like scrapbook layouts, one person did a stitched piece though, and several others did illustrations. It was fun to see how everyone approached the assignment and learn some interesting things about each coworker.
Julie, this is amazing! I love looking at all the bits and pieces and the way everything "fits" together. Now I want to make one too!!
Julie this is fabulous! I want to do one now too! I knew there was a purpose for all that little stuff I have been collecting.
